Paintings
Martin Sadler studied fine art at Reading University and graphic design at Chelsea School of Art, followed by a diploma in screenprinting at the London College of Printing.
He spent almost a decade working in the wine business in London before moving to Crete, where he started to paint again. In 1999 he returned to the UK, moving to St Ives, Cornwall – where generations of his family had lived and worked – to set up a shop dealing in nautical antiques and giftware. At the same time he continued to paint in watercolour, mainly landscapes and seascapes of the local area.
In 2005 Martin’s work took a new direction when, on becoming a full-time artist, he began to paint exclusively in oils. This new medium enabled his work to become bolder, looser and more painterly, without losing its characteristic qualities of strong composition and well observed form. Martin is inspired by the unique landscapes of West Cornwall and his lifelong love of boats and the sea; he is also a talented cook and enjoys producing delicious, small paintings of cakes and confectionery.
